Motorway Weather Intelligence Portal

At A Glance

What Makes It Work

Toll-plaza-level weather along the national motorway network

Live temperature with plain-language condition tags such as 'Very hot' and 'Windy'

Heat surface rendered along the road corridor for at-a-glance risk reading

Closure management, road-weather alerts and variable-signage control

Weather along a road, not over a region

Motorway operations depend on weather that a regional forecast cannot describe. Fog forms in one valley and not the next; a road surface freezes on a shaded stretch while the plaza ten kilometres on is clear. The operator had regional forecasts and a handful of manual observations, and a control room that needed to decide, plaza by plaza, when to post warnings, slow traffic or close a section. The portal was built to give them weather along the corridor itself: live observations at each toll plaza, a forecast for the route ahead, and the tools to act on it.

Plaza observations and a corridor heat surface

The platform is React with Mapbox GL JS on a Django back end. The route corridor map carries a labelled live-weather marker at every toll plaza on the national network, each showing temperature with a plain-language condition tag, clear, fog, heavy rain, so a controller reads the network state without interpreting numbers. A heat and temperature raster is draped along the road corridor for an at-a-glance view of where conditions change. Weather and Weather Viz modules give detailed per-parameter views and route-corridor forecasts for planning ahead. The operational modules are what the control room lives in: closure management for sections and plazas, road-weather alerts issued from the portal, and variable-signage control so a warning posted on the map reaches drivers on the road.

Decisions made per plaza, not per region

Controllers now act on what is happening at a specific plaza rather than a regional summary. Fog warnings go up where the fog is. Closures are managed from the same screen that shows why they are needed. The plain-language condition tags turned out to matter more than expected. They let non-meteorologists make consistent calls under pressure. This portal shares its ground-station network with the consumer weather app in our portfolio, and the route-planning logic built here later became that app's Motorway Journey Planner. It is a good example of how operational web application development and consumer mobile development can share a data backbone while serving completely different users.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How local are the observations?

Per toll plaza, from ground stations along the corridor. Each plaza has its own live marker with temperature and a condition tag, so the portal shows conditions at the resolution of the road rather than a regional forecast.

What are the plain-language condition tags?

Short descriptors, clear, fog, heavy rain, icy, derived from the station readings so a controller sees the operationally relevant state without interpreting raw numbers. They drive alert templates and signage suggestions.

Can controllers act from the portal?

Yes. Closure management, road-weather alert issuance and variable-signage control are built in, so a decision made from the weather view is executed from the same interface rather than a separate system.

Does it provide forecasts along a route?

Yes. Route-corridor forecasts in the Weather Viz module show expected conditions along a stretch of motorway over the coming hours, which supports planning closures and warnings ahead of an event rather than reacting to it.
