Comparison Guide
OpenAI and Anthropic both sell a top-tier, a mid-tier and a small model, and the prices are now close enough that the choice rarely comes down to cost. It comes down to your task, your data rules and your existing cloud. The figures below are from each provider's pricing page in September 2026 and change often, so check them before you budget.
Our Verdict
Our Build Recommendation
Build model-agnostic from day one. Put every model call behind one interface, keep prompts in version control with evaluation scores, and choose the model per task by testing both on your own data. Send high-volume simple work to a small model and reserve the top tier for the tasks where the difference is visible to users.

| Provider | OpenAI (also available through Microsoft Azure) | Anthropic (also available through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud) |
| Top-tier model (Sept 2026) | GPT-6 Astra | Claude Fable 5.1 |
| Top-tier price per 1M tokens | $10 input / $50 output (prompts up to about 272K tokens) | $10 input / $50 output |
| Mid-tier model and price | GPT-6.1 Sol: $2 input / $10 output | Claude Sonnet 5.5: $2 input / $10 output (Opus 5.5: $4 / $20) |
| Small, fast model and price | GPT-6 Luna: $0.10 input / $0.50 output | Claude Haiku 4.5: $1 input / $5 output |
| Context window | Standard pricing up to about 272K input tokens, higher rates beyond | 1M tokens at standard pricing on current models |
| Function calling and tools | Mature function calling and structured outputs | Tool use, plus server-side web search, code execution and computer use |
| Cost controls | Prompt caching and batch processing | Prompt caching (cache reads at a fraction of input price) and a 50% batch discount |
| Data residency options | Regional processing options vary by plan; confirm before you commit | US-only inference option at a 1.1x price multiplier, plus regional endpoints on Bedrock and Google Cloud |
| Self-hosting | No (API and cloud only) | No (API and cloud only); open-weight models are the self-hosted route |
How to Choose
The only comparison that predicts your result is one on your data. Collect fifty to two hundred real examples for each task type, write the expected outcome for each, run both models, and score them. Then compare cost per completed task rather than price per token, because tokenisers differ between providers and between model generations, so the same text becomes a different number of tokens.
Teams often pick OpenAI for its broad ecosystem, mature structured outputs and function calling, availability through Microsoft Azure and very inexpensive small models for classification and extraction. Teams often pick Claude for its large context window at standard pricing, strong tool use for agents, and availability through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud. These are tendencies, not rules, and each provider closes gaps quickly.
Put every model call behind one interface of your own, pin to dated model versions, keep prompts in version control with their evaluation scores, and re-run the scores whenever a new version ships. That makes switching or mixing providers a configuration change. Our LLM integration work is built this way, and our blog post on choosing between Claude, OpenAI and Gemini goes deeper.
FAQ
Which is better for building an AI chatbot, OpenAI or Claude?
Both build excellent chatbots. The deciding factors are usually your evaluation results on real customer questions, how well the model follows your tone and refusal rules, and which cloud you already use. We test both on a sample of the client's conversations before recommending one.
Which model is cheaper to use?
At the top and mid tiers the list prices are the same or very close: $10 and $50 per million tokens at the top, $2 and $10 in the middle. The small tiers differ, with GPT-6 Luna cheaper per token than Claude Haiku 4.5. Cost per task also depends on how many tokens each model uses for the same text, so compare cost per completed task on your own data rather than the price list alone.
Can I switch between OpenAI and Claude without rewriting my app?
Yes, if you build model-agnostic from day one with an abstraction layer or a thin provider interface of your own. That is our default on every AI project: one interface, several provider adapters, and a routing table in configuration that can change when a new model ships.
Does WORKFLOX work with both OpenAI and Claude?
Yes. We are model-agnostic and work with both, often routing different task types to different models. We benchmark the candidates on your use case before recommending a primary model.
